If you’ve read some of my previous blogs, you already know I love vacations! Now that summer is over, I am already beginning to plan out my trips for next year.
If you plan on taking a vacation or two in the future, here are my tips for a planning a successful trip:
Figure out how much money you want to allocate towards this trip so you can save enough to enjoy your vacation. Create an excel spreadsheet with actual and approximate (for the information you cannot find online) costs of everything. Doing this allows you to know how much money to save.
Once you have your budget in place, start saving for your future trip. You can create a separate account and automatically have money credited to your vacation savings fund so you do not even need to think about it. Any extra money you have after your bills are paid, add it to your vacation fund. The more money you have saved for a trip the less you will need to charge your credit card or go into further debt.
3) Plan Early
Now is not too early to plan. Actually it is the perfect time to plan. Are you going alone? With friends? Your significant other? Do your research, select a destination for you trip. Visit different travel sites for airfare, hotel rooms, excursions, places to eat, etc.
Start thinking about what you want your days to look like, then create an itinerary so while on vacation you will be less stressed. I find that not having an itinerary while on vacation creates confusion and you may end up wasting a whole day trying to figure out what to do. Even if you do not get to do everything on your itinerary at least you have a guide in place. As they say, create a plan or plan to fail.
4) Book Your Hotel & Flight
Sometimes it maybe a little too early to book a flight or hotel but shopping around throughout the months leading up to your vacation can give you a better idea of what you may end up spending.
3-6 months ahead of time is more than enough time to book your hotel. If you are lucky you could possibly score a great last minute deal as well. I personally do not like this option because often the hotel I have been eyeing is gone if I wait too close to my travel dates.
1-3 months ahead of time is great for booking flights. Again you could possibly score last minute deals however you risk over paying. The later you wait the more expensive it could be.
5) Prepare For Your Vacation
Make sure your passport and identification cards are not expired. Purchase those outfits you have been fantasizing about. Pack everything. (Tips can be found here on how to pack.) Enjoy your trip!
