How to Stop Comparing Yourself to Others

We’ve all heard the saying before that, comparison is the thief of joy.  Yet we do this every single day.  It seems that this is natural human behavior.

Living in today’s world it is so easy to get lost in what the Jones’ have going on over there in their yard.  With just the scroll of a fingertip on a social media platform, you can see the Jones’ going on lavish vacations, driving fancy cars, and living their fancy lifestyle.  Then you feel yourself getting jealous. But have you ever stopped to think about how the Jones’ got what they have?  What makes you think you deserve this same exact lifestyle? What makes you think you don’t deserve better? Are you bettering yourself so you can afford the things you desire? Do you really even want what they have or does it look good because it is what is “in” at the moment?

Though it seems that everyone else is always happy especially on social media, realize that could be a façade.  You have no idea how much sadness one faces daily and what else goes on behind closed doors.  How often have you seen someone post a picture of themselves when they are sad? Exactly.  More times than not you are getting a glimpse of their lives through their highest moments.  So stop comparing yourself!

Here are a few things you can do to stop comparing yourself to others:

Take a break

It is amazing how connected we are to our mobile devices.  I myself find it hard not to be on social media for long periods of times. It is an addiction.  Which is why the first thing that needs to be done is to stop scrolling on social media.  Uninstall the app from your phone if necessary. If you find that is too hard for you or you use social media for your business, then at least limit your usage of it.  Create a schedule which lists times you get to surf through social media and how long you will dedicate to it. Stick to this schedule and focus on business first, then scroll through at your leisure.

Also at times we need to take breaks from people in our inner circles and other external factors.  Do not be afraid to remove yourself from these situations or limit your exposure to them.

Get inspired

Surround yourself with things and people that inspire you. People around you should not make you jealous.  If they do you need to do some inside work to figure out why you are feeling this way.  You should feel inspired and empowered from seeing someone else’s success because you can be just as successful, you just need to work for it.  There is room for everyone to shine 🙂

Be grateful

Realize that there is only one of you, for that alone you should feel gratitude. We were not created to be the same as anyone else.  Even twins have their differences. Focus on being thankful so you can attract more things to be grateful for in your life.  Think law of attraction. What you think you will attract more of.

Focus on you

Focus on what makes you unique. Focus on your strengths and work towards improving your strengths.  Spend some time meditating to get clear on what you want. Write down as many details as you can about these goals. Create a plan to accomplish your goals. Work on getting what you want every single day. Do not stop until you get it.

Have fun

Don’t be hard on yourself regarding life.  Life is a journey not a competition, so instead of comparing yourself to others, focus on comparing yourself to you along the ride.  You will see the growth as long as you are working towards your goals.  Create time away from your goals to have fun otherwise you can get tired of working towards your goals. Balance is key.

Remember you only have one life to live, so live it be-U-tifully, by being you to the fullest.
