With all the unhealthy options surrounding us, it makes it difficult to eat healthy let alone snack healthy. The best way to stay on track is to plan ahead by bringing snacks along with you everywhere you go. I have a serious sweet tooth so I keep snacks in my house, in my desk at work, in my car, and sometimes in my purse. This way when a craving strikes I am less likely to buy a doughnut at the local coffee shop or eat that cupcake my coworkers brought in to celebrate someone’s birthday with.
Do not get me wrong I am human so occasionally I do go out and get that doughnut that has been calling my name, however if I already have something to satisfy my sweet tooth readily available I am 9 out of 10 times more likely to avoid falling off the wagon. By choosing to eat what I already have, this will not only help keep off extra pounds but also will help me save money . Since I am trying to cut out my habit of buying unhealthy food items all together I thought I would share a list of my favorite vegan, non genetically modified, and minimally processed snacks with no extra chemical additives.
When I want something sweet:
Fruits are my first choice
I love both fresh fruits and dried fruits. They are packed with nutrients which the body needs. Although fresh is always better, it is more convenient to have dried fruits on hand. Dried fruits are already cut, washed, and prepared for a fast paced, on the go lifestyle. My favorite dried fruits to snack on are mangoes and figs.
I also love to indulge in sweet plantain chips and apple sauce to satisfy my sweet cravings.
For My Chocolate Fix
When I am craving chocolate, instead of the chocolate bars filled with high fructose corn-syrup, I opt for healthier options such as Mom’s Munchies Choco-Chunk Hemp Cookie and Hail Merry Chocolate Almond Butter Tart. I recently fell in love with the scrumptiously delicious Living Raw Chocolate Truffles and I am happy to announce they will be a staple snack in my cabinet . They definitely give me my chocolate fix!
For the times when I want something savory
I eat raw or roasted (preferably dry roasted) walnuts, Brazil nuts, almonds, and cashews. Seasnax seaweed snacks are also great along with tortilla chips, green plantain chips, and dried chickpea snacks.
All of these items can be found at Trader Joe’s, Mom’s Organic, Whole Foods, Aldi, and/ or Takoma Park Co-op. I rarely shop at Safeway or Giant but surprisingly on the occasion that I do pop in there they may have some of these items available as well.
Also, I try to buy organic whenever possible.
